Captain V Vice Captain Opening Match

Well, what an ignominious way to start my Captaincy ! If I were a politician I would most likely have to fall on my sword by resigning or face a vote of no confidence!

In Saturday’s Opening Match the Captain’s Team marshalled by myself and Ladies’ Captain Jane Wallace was soundly beaten 11.5 to 4.5 by the Vice Captain’s team led by Jamie Rodgers and Ladies Vice Captain Pam MacGillivray. Jane and I started well, two up after three, however, it was impossible to match the good fortune that fell Jamie’s way, using numerous trees to keep his ball in the middle of the fairway plus Pam’s steely nerve in sinking important putts. Nevertheless, the whole day marked a most enjoyable start to the season, even if it was a touch ‘parky’, with the first golfers having to delay their start by 30 minutes due to frost. As always the course looked splendid in the spring sun (when it showed its face). I am sure all who played would agree with me when I say it was just nice to spend some time outdoors with friends and it was certainly a better start than we had last year.

If we continue to win the battle against COVID there is no reason why we cannot enjoy a full golfing season, completing all scheduled competitions, Team Matches and Opens. Fingers crossed !

Thanks go to Ross for keeping us right with the new Handicap system and John for a most welcome takeaway coffee and bacon roll at the end of the round. Next up we have the Seniors’ and Ladies’ Stableford Competitions followed by the Easter Texas Scramble. Thursday Stablefords, which are open to gents and ladies, begin on April 1st. As we begin to exit lock-down watch this space for Social events and the re-opening of the Bar and Restaurant inside and out.

Regards

Douglas
