




Boat of Garten’s annual Seniors Open on Thursday last week was played in ideal conditions and attracted a full complement of 105 players including 84 visitors. In the race for the Seniors’ Open title early starter Norman MacWilliam (Kingussie) returned 73 and led the field for most of the day but was edged out by Royal Dornoch’s Bert Nicholson in the last group home who scored 71 to take the trophy. The handicap trophy was retained with a nett 66 by Boat’s Alan Boxx (11) on countback over the last 6 holes from John Cleland (11) from Barassie GC. So Cleland took 1st prize in Section 1 (0-12) ahead of Derek Deakin (Hickleton) on 68 with Jim Thompson (Boat) in 3rd place. In Section 2 (13-24) Ray Barrett (Grantown on Spey) (15) carded a nett 68 for the top prize, just ahead of 3 players on 69 who were separated by countback, Tony Boon (Blair Atholl), James Dykes (Boat) and Ron Falkiner (Oldmeldrum). Deeside’s Dougie Davidson edged out Boat’s Brian Jones for 5th place.

On Saturday, the gents led the way competing for the Boat Hotel Trophy, first presented in 1947. Scoring was low and produced a CSS of 68. Playing in the first group out, Steven Thomas (7) continued his good form this season and set the pace with a superb 64, which unsurprisingly proved too good for the rest of the field. A very close race for 2nd place resulted in 4 players returning 67 with John MacBean (12) edging out Les Paterson (16), Martin Forster (6) and Steven McRitchie (16) on countback, with Tommy Loynes (13) one stroke further behind in 6th. Along with the trophy the winner received a prize voucher from sponsors The Boat Hotel.

The Ladies’ Extra Medal (Silver Division) was won by Mairi MacWilliam (20) whose 74 just pipped Margaret Thompson (18) into 2nd spot by 1 stroke with Maureen Smyth (20) in 3rd on 76. The Bronze section was more clear cut with Christine Reynolds (26) winning the day with 73, 2 strokes clear of runner-up Catherine Souter-Bell (24) and well clear of 3rd place Christine Reid (23) 79.
